Review: IMAX Theater, Prasad's - Hyderabad, India

Introduction

When you are a die-hard fan of animated movies, the one thing you will always run behind is the quality and ambiance of the theater especially when it’s a 3-D movie like the Transformers.
Hyderabad, the city of Nizams boasts to have what they call the world’s most powerful film projector and this facility possesses a 6-channel sound system with an output of 12,000 watts of digital surround sound. It is South India's First IMAX Theater, India's 3rd IMAX Theater, World's largest 3-D IMAX screen.
During this review we would like to blow the lids from some of the myths about this place that every Hyderabadi is proud of – The Prasads & its IMAX theater.
Design
Prasad's IMAX is a centrally Air Conditioned multiplex of an area of 2,35,000 sq ft, housing an IMAX™ Movie theatre, a five screen multiplex.  There are food-courts, eating joints and small retail outlets for branded wears etc. at this 3 storied complex. The 3D Screen is situated on the 1st floor. The first Green theater in India by installation of a 100KWp Solar Photo-voltaic power generation system on its rooftop which rather commendable.
Ambiance
The Prasads from outside looks modern, semi-circular in design with vast open space for both ground and underground parking. One side of complex faces the famous Hussain Sagar lake.
Having lived in places like Mumbai, Delhi & Gurgaon, for us the Prasad’s was a not even a mall. We found it very small in area covered.
Since we were there to watch the famous latest series of Transformers: Age of Extinction in 3D, the first disappointment came when we read the notice on the board that this is not an IMAX movie. The show was scheduled to begin from 10.45 PM (IST) and we wanted to check the facility of IMAX theatre. To our surprise there was no second level of frisking that we usually see in Mumbai and Delhi. Both movie watchers and non-movies watcher had easy access to IMAX lounge which was strange. We then quickly wanted to use rest-rooms before the movie begins, and it made us feel appalled at the apathy of such a famous Multiplex. The washrooms were no different from what we see at train stations etc – unclean, smelly. We further noticed that the washroom-cleaner was using commode’s water and mopping the floor. This really made us feel sick. The mirrors were full of strains and we could not stay there any longer. By now we were completely pissed by IMAX authorities.

The movie did not start at time, the show was delayed by 15 minutes. The 3D glasses were handed over to us which were of poor quality and had lot of scratches. As we were entering into the theatre, we did not notice any fire extinguishers placed anywhere, not at least the one we noticed. I was impressed by the sheer size of the screen. We were place in middle of H row. The seats were of very poor standards, with no recline, very hard surface and there was hardly any space between two rows. Any person who is tall like me, had huge difficulty in stretching my legs especially when you are watching a 3D movie to experience in better way.

The movie & sound quality was just about average. We found quality and ambience much better at Big Cinemas at TGIP in Noida. Normally when movie starts, the theatre authorities normally play advertisement and fire-exit plans in case of any emergencies. Unfortunately nothing of that sort ever came up. There was no staff that would help you navigate to your seat. In case you are an elderly couple or personal with special needs, this place might bring you a lot of trauma.
General Observations
Well, nothing about the place & architecture, but the IMAX experience was truly disappointing. You are shelling decent amount of money to watch a movie, relax and doesn’t worth it. It’s just the name Hyderabadi’s for reasons unknown to us. It may be the case that they haven’t seen better places yet.
IMAX authorities really need to improve basics of services and cleanliness and rest will follow.
