Review: Nokia N1 tablet - An ideal iPad competitor

Introduction

Nokia is back with a bang. After selling its devices and services unit to Microsoft for $7.2 billion Nokia today unveiled its first tablet N1. Nokia made a cheeky escape to the restrictions made as part of the deal with Microsoft i.e no longer use of Nokia brand till Q4 2016, and on feature phones for 10 years.

With new features like the Z launcher, powered by Android Lollipop and of course the brand Nokia makes it a compelling and refreshing option from the regular tablets.

Getting to know about Nokia N1

Display on Nokia N1
On the first sight, Nokia N1 appears as a customized version of Apple iPad mini with screen size and resolution matching accurately to the latter. Nokia has also gone for a single piece of anodized aluminum design which has been a very iPad thing till now. The tablet will be available in Lava Grey and Natural aluminum colors.

Build and Quality

Nokia N1 - Front & Rear
Nokia N1 is built from single piece aluminium and has a very premium metallic finish.

Display: The display looks fantastic and has a close to perfect viewing angle and as Nokia suggests “From the zero air-gap display to its perfect balance, everything has been crafted for thinness and lightness.” the tablet has ultra-sleek dimensions of 200.7 x 138.6 x 6.9 mm (7.9 inch) which is both thinner and lighter than Apple’s offering.
The screen comes with 2048x1536 resolution and is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. It further has IPS panel with LED backlight.
The rear of the tablet is very much similar to that of Apple iPad Mini but the unique scoring point for Nokia N1 is the implementation of reversible Type-C USB connector.

Camera

Nokia N1 Camera
N1 has 8 MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and 5 MP front-facing camera, fixed focus and is capable of 1080p video recording. The images are sharp and details are appealing. A good front facing camera has not left the selfies crowd cribbing about the poor quality.

OS, GUI and Processor

Nokia has come up with an all-new concept of Z launcher which is predictive in nature. The apps on the home screen will be determined by your usage calculated over a period of time. Z launcher also automatically reminds of tasks that you do daily such as calling your girlfriend at 8 in the morning. Another feature is the Scribble search based on the pattern drawn on the home screen- Sounds interesting ehhh.

If that was not enough to impress you, the Nokia N1 is run on latest Android Lollipop on a quad-core Intel® 64-bit Atom™ 2.3 GHz Processor Z3580.

Storage and Battery

Sleek - iPad look & feel of Nokia N1
N1 is powered by a large 18.5 Wh (5300 mAh) rechargeable lithium polymer battery (3.7 V) that should easily last a day with normal usage. The tablet has 32GB inbuilt memory and 2 GB RAM to give you enough space for apps and running them comfortably.

General Observation & Verdict

Go get it !!! This tablet doesn’t seems to lets you down in any of the aspects. From predictive Z launcher to reversible Type-C USB connector, Nokia seems to have worked a lot on implementing new stuff. The only downside we can think of is its stark resemblance to the Apple iPad but overall its worthwhile.
