Year 2015 will be a landmark year for camera maker firm Kodak, which has decided to unveil a new range of Android smartphones to compete directly with world major players like Samsung, Sony, LG, Apple, Nokia, HTC & Motorola etc. The advantage with Kodak is the smart-phone will be equipped with image management software & will showcase features which has never been seen before in any other smart phones.

Instead of Smartphone with Camera, this is going to be a Camera with smartphone. Interesting isn’t it?

While the name of the smartphone is still not out, experts believe smartphone will be launched during at CES 2015 event Las Vegas next month. The aim of Kodak is to target audience who are not so savy with current complex smartphones available in the market but also want high-niche experience with great UI & most importantly subtle design. At this moment the specifications of the phone has been kept as confidential however following are some leaked information of what we can expect from Kodak:

1) OS: Android Kitkat or Lollipop

2) Camera: Handset will sport high MP camera with imaging capabilities and will come with management and sharing features along with bespoke image capture

3) Processor & RAM: As per the press release, the emphasis will be more on Functional capabilities and services rather than hardware specification

4) Connectivity: The phone will be 4G/ WiFi enabled

5) Storage: NA

General Observation & Verdict

Highs: With Android smartphone market being already over-saturated, it will be interesting to see how Kodak brings up an innovative smartphone to compete directly with Samsung (Galaxy S4 Zoom & Galaxy K zoom), Lumix DMC-CM1, Nikkon & Panasonic etc. For photography enthusiasts Kodak will make a lot of sense as it plans to quench their urge for end to end photography solutions by state of art image management software powering these phones.

Lows: Since Kodak is just out of bankruptcy, this new range is a huge gamble. The pricing, markets & socializing their phone will be a new challenge for them to undertake. It will not be easy for consumers to adapt Kodak as smartphone maker.
